How I Create My Statues
From Design to Concrete – Creating a Unique Mould Prototype
Every statue starts long before the concrete is poured. The process begins with designing a unique model, carefully shaping proportions, details, and structure to make sure the final piece looks strong and balanced in a garden setting.
Once the design is finalised, I create a 3D prototype using precision 3D printing. This allows me to refine every detail — facial features, textures, folds, and depth — before committing to full production. The printed prototype becomes the master pattern used to create a high-quality mould.
Creating the Silicone & Fiberglass Mould
Once the 3D printed prototype is perfected, the next step is turning it into a durable production mould. First, I carefully prepare and seal the 3D print to ensure a smooth surface and clean release.
I then apply multiple layers of high-quality RTV silicone by hand, building up thickness gradually to capture every fine detail — from textures to sharp edges. This flexible silicone layer becomes the inner mould, responsible for reproducing the exact detail of the original design.
After the silicone cures, I create a strong outer support shell using fiberglass and resin. This rigid jacket keeps the silicone mould stable and properly shaped during casting, ensuring consistent, high-quality concrete statues every time.
Casting in Concrete & Applying the Patina Finish
Once the silicone and fiberglass mould is complete, it’s time for casting. The mould is securely assembled and prepared, then filled with a carefully mixed, high-strength concrete blend. The concrete is compacted and vibrated to remove air bubbles and ensure every fine detail is captured.
After proper curing time, the mould is carefully opened and the raw concrete statue is revealed. At this stage, edges are cleaned, surfaces are refined, and the piece is inspected for quality.
To give the statue character and depth, I apply a hand-finished patina. This layered paint process enhances textures, highlights details, and creates a natural aged stone effect. The finish is sealed for durability, making it weather-resistant and suitable for the Scottish climate.
